About SWCHSMUN

SWCHSMUN is organized and run by members of the Sir Winston Churchill High School Model UN team under the supervision of three faculty advisors: Mr. Kevin Gilchrist, Mr. David MacGregor, and Ms. Laura Phui. When SWCHSMUN began there was only one Model UN conference available to students in Calgary, and that was the annual conference hosted by the University of Calgary. It has been amazing to see the growth in popularity in Model United Nations in Calgary with other high schools hosting conferences over the last 10 years of SWCHSMUN’s existence. The Churchill Model UN team is made up of a large group of enthusiastic students who enjoy the debate and discussion of global issues, and diplomacy. Typically, there are over 90 students that are part of the Churchill Model UN team every school year. Some of these students are selected to become a part of the Churchill Model UN travel team. Over the years, the Churchill Model UN team has traveled to participate in Model UN conferences in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Chicago, and New York City. Our very last Model UN trip outside of Canada was to New York City to participate in NHSMUN. Churchill was the first Canadian high school to win the Award of Distinction award (1st place) in the history of NHSMUN. Like many Model UN teams, Churchill students will not be able to travel to MUN conferences due to COVID-19. Rather than cancel what has become a long-standing tradition at Churchill, we have decided to move our 10th anniversary edition of SWCHSMUN online. We really hope to have a wide variety of schools participate in our conference this year virtually!
